at this romney campaign ad slamming president obama. >> obama took a gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italians who were going to build jeeps and china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. gerri: and the left out swinging today claiming the ad is inaccurate, including joe biden who called it flagrantly dishonest. my next guest says romney has it right. here to explain, associate fellow for the national legal and policy center. great to have you back. always a pleasure to have you on the show. this all came out of a report in bloomberg. let me read you what the road and read your response. european sales, the ceos, sergio marchini, considering building chrysler models in italy, including jeeps, for export to north america. now, is that true or is that false? >> that is absolutely true, and prior to that there was a bloomberg report that did say that the yacht was going to be building jeeps in china, possibly old jeeps, so that is where the governor romney got that information. now, there was one slight inaccuracies under the romney and where he said the obama admi
and today his running mate is spinning more of the same. >> these companies, chrysler in particular, we know their story, they are now choosing to expand to manufacturing overseas. these are the facts. >> the facts? what about the fact that the company is also expanding in america? politico has gotten four pin noek key ohios from "the washington post." he's been slammed by the ceo's of chrysler and gm and called out by the conservative of the detroit news and by the columbus dispatch. today the denver post editorial board hit the romney campaign for outsourcing the truth, saying it smells like desperation and it's shameful. today, vice president biden ripped into the romney lot. >> in the last hours of this campaign, they have become truly desperate. >> chrysler said, quote, it was a leap that would being even difficult for a professional circus acrobat. that's the quote. by the way, i don't think they are acrobats. i think these guys are contorsoinists. >> governor romney is down by five points in ohio, according to the latest polls. for mr. romney, desperate times call for desperate measur
. the real jeep news that day was actually that chrysler announced they were adding 1100 new jobs in the u.s. here making jeeps in detroit. and chrysler says it could hire almost as many people at another plant in warren, michigan. chrysler is investing half a billion in its toledo plant. but mitt romney got up that said defiance, ohio and says they are movering all their jobs. it's embarrassing for mr. romney. why would mitt romney get up in front of 12,000 people in ohio and tell them the auto bailout hasn't helped you at all. your jobs are going to china. i read it somewhere. where's the story? we found it. he was apparently trolling the nether regions of the right-wing press. he found it on a washington examiner blog post, which reported, quote, jeep, an obama favorite, looks to shift production to china. a move that would crash the economy in toledo. this is a misreading of a bloomberg report that was reporting good news. global demand for jeep has riz on to the point where they can sell more in china and wants to build jeeps for china in china. this is good news for an american compa
of the -- the ceos of chrysler and gm had to come out and say you're lie being us and you're going to hurt our sales with your lies. he's not really keeping up with business there, but i have to tell you also, earlier this week he got subsumed by the sandy coverage as it should have, but i put out a story with another videotape in which mitt romney talking to a fund-raiser earlier this year says, you know, there's a better business environment in china than the united states. well, why is that? it's because they have no worker protections, no environmental -- >> they have no human rights, david. >> and low wages. so is he saying he wants to bring us back to that point? like to the days of cal coolidge as joy suggests? >> david, yes. >> there's a lot going on that doesn't compute and when it does compute it's rather scary. >> there's something called the moonlight magnolia theory of economics. the south practices it right now. when you strip away unions and you can lower wages, businesses are more profitable. that's why wall street -- you see the stock market tick up when companies lay people off bec
industry. he's supported by the detroit news. obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy. >> before i get you to comment on it. i'm going to go to the obama ad. it is a response to this ad. obama ad called collapsed. it's a rebutle to this ad. >> when the auto industry faced collapse, mitt romney turned his back. even the conservative detroit news criticized romney for wrongheadedness on the bailout. and now, after romney's false claim of jeep out sourcing to china. >> here's what i want to know. i don't know the answer. and this is a good example. one of them's got to be wrong. who is wrong? >> well , the romney ad is technically true but misleading. one of the things he claims, it goes on to say that chrysler is going to increase production of jeeps in china. and turns out they are increasing production of jeeps in the u.s. and in china. and you are left with the misleading impression that they are moving jobs from the u.s. to china. in fact, they are increasing production in both places. >> okay. >> there's another couple factors. one is the detroit news of romney. romney 's right to s
in ohio right now. you look at that chrysler ad, you look at this desperate republican ad trying to convince black folk that the republican party are on their side. they speak down to voters and let voters understand the ways in which politics gets really, really messy at this stage of the game. >> it's not just the campaign, it's the character of the man. that's what's being exposed to ari's point. >> yes. >> by these ads. is that not true? if you willfully lie repeatedly to the electorate, what does that say about you as an individual? >> it doesn't speak very highly of you. again, i'm all about authenticity and truth in politics. i know that seems really, really crazy in the 21st century. i think the american electorate is with me on this. at the end of the day mitt romney has played with the truth fast and furious, as we said, many times on your show. this is the result, the six-point deficit in ohio. >> despite that misleading g-pad, he hasn't made any inroads in ohio, as we've heard. we've heard about this absurd ad in spanish to latino voters where there's the president li
for that essentially false ad that has been debunked widely and now that chrysler and gm and their executives have come out against mitt romney, that's been a really big problem for mitt romney. >> and they're adding jobs, they're even adding jobs at the honda plant. in the end, will you both be watching the cleveland area, cuyahoga county on the list? >> and the columbus area where we are right now, which is one of the swing counties here. a very, very important. but the bottom line is turnout. if the obama/sherrod brown organization can bring out the vote, they can win this state. but, you know, a lot fewer people voted here in 2010 and the republicans ran the table in ohio. so unless some of those 2008 voters come out again, the ones who stayed home in 2010, obama could have some trouble. they've got to come back to the polls. the indications are they will, but we don't know for sure. >> and the that is the whole point of the obama turnout operation that has been in place now for four years. the state director, greg schultz, has been on the ground in ohio since the last campaign, the last presidenti
out today showed toyota led the way with a sales gain of almost 16%. chrysler reported its best october since 2007 with a 10% increase. g.m. sales were up 5%, while ford's numbers increased not quite half a percent. wall street headed higher after new reports showed consumer confidence and manufacturing on the rise. the dow jones industrial average gained 136 points to close at 13,232. the nasdaq rose more than 42 points to close at 3,020. those are some of the day's major stories. now, back to judy. >> woodruff: after devoting the first half of the week to hurricane sandy and its aftermath, the president returned to the campaign trail today. with the election around the corner, mr. obama received a surprise endorsement. with the devastation of the megastorm consuming his attention, new york city mayor michael bloomberg surprised the political world today by endorsing president obama for re-election. in a statement, bloomberg said the hurricane's cost "in lost lives, lost homes and lost business brought the stakes of tuesday's presidential election into sharp relief." he credite
gm and chrysler into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to the italians who will build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> reporter: john kasich said the bailout impact on ohio has been overstated. >> when you take into account the companies and suppliers you're up 400 jobs. we didn't grow ohio's economy on just one industry. >> but his predecessor pushed back. >> i believe that the table was set by president obama and ohioans recognize that and i think that's why the president is going to win ohio. >> reporter: both campaigns in the wake of sandy have called off fundraising, emails and any fundraising events in any of the affected states. mitt romney's campaign put out word he spoke with the republican governors of states impacted on the storm,er name dropped chris christie and bob mcdonnell. the president will be in the situation room dealing with fema and that fallout. this is the october surprise but we don't know what it all means in eight days. savannah? >> chuck todd, thank you. joe scarborough and mika are hosts of "morning joe." >> one thing we do know
